The Shoremen’s head soccer coach, Roy Dunshee, will be honored with an award from the United Soccer Coaches. The award, titled Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Eduation Award, is given to one coach every year, who has made positive contributions to the game as well as excelled in educating other coaches.
“Coach [Dunshee] is a great coach. One of the best in the business” junior defenseman Frank Koons said. “I’m so happy he is receiving this award; he deserves it more than anyone else I know.”
The award, which is named after a former USC Director of Coaching and Vice President of Education, is given away each year in memory of the Notre Dame Coach. It is given to help promote recognition among coaches.
For over 20 years, Coach Dunshee has been a part of a group called Coerver Coaching, a company that provides tips and supplies to assist coaches, like team training, camps, clinics, and, most importantly, coaches’ education.
“The award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving coach. Coach Dunshee has done such a good job of mentoring my teammates and myself, through my first three years at WC.” said junior midfielder Zach Urbanski. “It also gives me confidence that the drills we do in practice have a purpose, and that they are designed to make us better.”
The work Coach Dunshee does goes far beyond the soccer field. Dunshee is also the leader of the Developing Ethical Leaders Through Athletics, or, DELTA program,
DELTA is a program offered to all Washington College student-athletes, designed to help student athletes become better leaders, using ethical and moral tactics to approach tough situations both on and off the field. Every class has a meeting or two with him a year, talking about ways they can be leaders from a young age.
“When he speaks, he finds a way to grab everyone’s attention,” junior softball player Amelia Mazza said. “He makes it seem like he is talking directly to you, even though the room is full.”
Dunshee will be presented the award on Jan. 17, at the annual award banquet in Baltimore.
