Men’s and women’s swimming continue losing streak in conference play

The swim teams at WC both suffered another conference loss against Dickinson College on Saturday, Jan. 25

On Friday, Jan. 17, the Washington College men’s swimming team hosted the Spartans of York College. The team was able to place first in six different events, but sadly lost to York at 103-80. 

Freshman Gage Mandrell improved his 1000 free time by almost six seconds making him the fourth fastest swimmer ever at WC. His personal record now stands at 10:02.64. He was able to outrace his opponents by 50 seconds as well as winning the 100 breaststroke at 1.01.90. 

Right behind him was another Shoremen capturing second in the 100 breaststroke, senior Mike Cebzanov, with a time of 1.07. Junior Andrew Feeley won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1.48.85. Freshman Jackson Graham and senior Seth Wrigley went one-two in the 100 butterfly with 54.40 (Graham) and 55.59 (Wrigley). Together they added 13 points to their teams score. 

Nate Braddock, sophomore, took home the win in the 500 freestyle with a 12 second advantage over the runner up with a time of 5.02.40. He also placed second in the 200-individual medley at 2.06.25. Mandrell, Feeley, Wrigley, and Graham won the 400-freestyle relay at 3.21.97. 

The next day, the team went on the road to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to compete against the Albright Lions in a non-conference match. The Shoremen sadly lost at 169-85, but still had many victories within the meet. 

Feeley took home first in the 100 backstrokes at 55.04 as well as the 200 backstroke at 1.59.90. Both times he achieved in this match were close to the school record he holds for both the 100 and 200 backstrokes at 51.82 and 1.49.52. Alike to him, Graham has racked up plenty of wins this season, including his first place in the 50 freestyles at 22.66 and a second-place win in the 100 butterfly at 54.87. 

Mandrell also secured the win in the 200-individual medley at 2.05.60. Mandrell also had a second-place win, but in the 500 freestyle at 4.58.29. Feeley, Mandrell, Braddock, and Wrigley worked together in the 200-freestyle relay to take second at 1:31.30.

They also took second in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3.41.47. Braddock also placed second in the 100 freestyle at 49.73 and the 200 freestyle at 1.49.96.  Sophomore Joseph Bozzi earned second in the 200 IM at 2:06.11. 

The Shoremen took on Dickinson College on their senior day at home in the Casey Swim Center this past Saturday, Jan. 25.  

Dickinson College took first in almost every race that meet with the exception of Mandrell, who placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, Feeley, who placed first in the 200 Men’s Backstroke and 200 yard IM.  WC also took home first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Braddock, Feeley, Graham and Mandrell competing.      

The final score of the meet was 87-155 setting the Shoremen back leaving them with no conference wins for the 2019-2020 season.  

The team was visited by York College of Pennsylvania this past Friday. The Shorewomen sadly fell to York at 113-86.  However, the women had many small wins within the water. 

Sophomore Alexa Luecke won two individual events, including the 200 individual medley at 2:16.35 and the 500 freestyle in 5:30.82. Behind her was another Shorewomen,  sophomore Anna Hall, who placed second in the 100 backstroke at 2:18.89. 

Another sophomore, Emily Homer, took home first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.36. 

Shorewomen sophomore Teresa Draves, junior Allison Gallagher, junior Lindsay Strauss, and freshman Alex May won the 400 freestyle relay at 2:04.73. Draves was also able to take home second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.92. 

The next day, the women traveled to Brynn Mawr to compete again in a tri-match where they achieved 12 first place finishes out of 14 events. The Shorewomen went up against a conference competitor, Bryn Mawr College, and Albright College. The women won their conference match at 187-70 and their non-conference at 174-76. 

Freshman Kristina Curley achieved two first place finishes in the 500 and 1000 freestyle races. Her times were impressively 5:33.07 in the 500 and 11:15.78 in the 1000. 

Draves managed to take first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:33.82 as well as the 200 individual medley at 2:15.58. 

The 100 and 200 breaststroke was won by Gallagher with times of 1:04.50 in the 100 and 2:18.57 in the 200. Hall was also able to grab two wins in the meet. She won the 100 butterfly at 1:01.63 and the 200 butterfly at 2:18.26. Luecke also finished first in the 100 freestyle at 56.92 and the 200 freestyle at 2:04.09. 

The quad of Luecke, Draves, Hall, and Gallagher captured the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.80. The 400 medley relay was won by Gallagher, Homer, Hall, and Luecke in 4:16.66. 

The Shorewomen went 1-2 in the 400 medley relay with senior Savannah Quade, senior Alex Searles, senior Lindsay Wiecki, and Strauss placing second with a time of 4:24.13 May also placed second overall in the 200 individual medley at 2:24.65. 

The Shorewomen next faced off against the Dickinson Red Devils and fell to them in a final score of 107-150.  

Draves was the lead scorer for the Shorewomen this day as she snatched two wins to lead all other swimmers for the day and contribute heavily to the overall score of the match. 

In addition to Draves, Hall won the 200 butterfly and Curley, Lueke and Gallagher all took second in their respective events 1000 and 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.  

May also took second in the 200 IM and Strauss earned herself third in the 50 freestyle.

Lastly, the 400 freestyle, swam by Curley, Straus, Quade and Wiecki earned the team first place and 17 points towards their overall meet score. 

The Shorewomen are now 4-7 in their overall record and 1-4 in the conference.
