Pets of the Week: Lucy and Dezi

As anyone with a brother or sister will tell you, having a sibling is a wild experience. No one can push your buttons quite as accurately or know how to comfort you quite as well.

A sibling can be infuriating, but if your relationship is solid, they can make life so much more fun.

Lucy and Dezi, this week’s Pets of the Week, know what it is like to go through the world with a sibling always at your side.

Lucy and Dezi are a dynamic duo that have prowled the window kennel of the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County since November.

They are both three years old, and of the two, Dezi tends to act more his age. A goofy boy who loves affection, he will amble up to the nearest human with his feathery tail waving.

An open lap or free hand will soon be occupied as he asks you to sweep over the sleek fur behind his ears or scratch the long coat on his slender frame.

Lucy is the more precocious sibling, and tends to be more withdrawn. She is quite content to perch high on the cat tree and observe her brother’s antics from afar, and you cannot help but get the sense that she may be rolling her bright green eyes a little.

Though these two are not a fully bonded pair, they tend to enjoy each other’s company, even when Dezi antagonizes Lucy by poking her ear as she sleeps or swatting her playfully from the next perch over.

Lucy and Dezi were returned to the ACSKC after being adopted out a few years back.

Though Dezi’s playful nature and Lucy’s relaxed air make them a cool duo for almost any home, they have been passed up, perhaps because they are both solid black.

But they have adapted well to shelter life again, and though Dezi will need occasional surgeries to remove chronic kidney stones, a condition that his forever home must be willing to accommodate, his bouncy spirit is unhampered.

Lucy and Dezi would thrive in a home dominated by the feline, with no dogs and respectful children. Though they do not have to be adopted out together, it seems a shame to split these fire-and-ice partners in crime after going through life together for so long.

They balance each other out, a charcoal yin and yang with an affinity for feather toys.

If you are interested in adopting Lucy and/or Dezi, you can fill out an adoption application online or in person at the Animal Care Shelter of Kent County at 10720 Augustine Herman Highway, Chestertown, MD, or call at 410-778-3648.
