The Washington College athletic coaches have started to name team captains for their upcoming seasons. With the closing of campus this fall, not all official captains have been named for some sports.
All sports are cancelled until Jan. 1. It is possible that all sports may begin their seasons in late winter or spring, but there are no final decisions yet.
Captains of fall and potentially winter sports may have a very unique season to lead.
The Women’s Volleyball team has named three seniors as its captains: Abby Hilty from Annandale, N.J., Kylie Peets from Salmon, Idaho, and Isabella Sansanelli from East Northport, N.Y.
Hilty was named Most Improved Player in 2017 and led the team in digs her junior year. Peets finished second on the team with the most kills and was on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2018 and 2019. Sansanelli finished second on the team in blocks.
Men’s Basketball has named four captains. Senior Daniel Brown from Silver Spring, Md., senior Barry McCormick from Annapolis, Md., senior Cole Storm from Oreland, Pa. and junior Tray Wright from Baltimore, Md.
Brown was the 2020 All-Centennial Conference honorable mention and was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 2019 and 2020. McCormick averaged 6 points per game in 2020 and has been named Shoreman of the Week twice. Storm made the 2019 Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll. Wright was the Centennial Conference Player of the week in 2019 and leads the team in assists.
“It’s an honor and a huge accomplishment,” Storm said. “I’m still really hoping for a season this school year.”
Women’s Basketball has announced three captains. Senior Gemma Mochi from New Market, Md., junior Crystal Jones from Silver Spring, Md., and junior Madeline Williams from Oxford, Pa.
Before coming to WC in the fall of 2019, Mochi played at Georgian Court. At WC her junior year, she shot 100% from the free throw line. Jones was named the 2020 Most Improved Player. Williams made the 2020 Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and this will be her second year serving as a team captains.
“I’m really excited for this season, whatever it ends up being or when,” said Williams.
Men’s Lacrosse team named senior Chris Del Rosario from Springfield Va., senior Charlie Wittich from Towson, Md., senior Joe Maimone from Allendale, N.J., and junior Jeremy Wilson from Ellicott City, Md. as captains for this upcoming season.
Maimone was the team’s Most Improved Player in 2020. Del Rosario won the Most Valuable Player award in 2019 and 2020. Wittich formerly played at Gettysburg College; at WC he has five goals. Wilson led the team in assists and points.
“When I found out that I was picked for captain my senior year as well, I was honored. It holds a lot of responsibility and I hope that I can make an impact on my teammates and the lacrosse culture at WC,” Del Rosario said.
Women’s Rowing has also announced their captains for the 2020-2021 season with senior Emma Dodsworth from Port Republic, Md., senior Annie Krysztofiak from Paoli, Pa., and junior Caroline Jackson from Annapolis, Md.
Dodsworth was awarded the CRCA Scholar-Athlete Award in 2020. Krysztofiak was named the Team Most Improved Player in 2019. And Jackson was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 2020.
The captains for the rest of the teams will be named in the future.
