Volleyball struggles to achieve success within Conference

The Shorewomen continued their up and down season with two wins and three losses, bringing their overall record to 8–10 and their Centennial Conference record to 1–5.

The Shorewomen took their first Conference win on Oct. 6, sweeping the Bryn Mawr College Owls.

Trailing 15–13 in the first set, the Shorewomen rallied with eight consecutive points to surpass the deficit, taking a 21-15 lead. A kill from senior Jenna Daunoras ended the set, 25-21.

The second set saw the Shorewomen leading 12–9 before netting another eight straight points. Sophomore Jordan Fairchild took the set for the Shorewomen with a kill, ending it 25-13.

The Shorewomen dominated the third set, leading 18–0. Junior Courtney Maxwell clinched an ace to end the third set in a final victory for the Shorewomen, 25–10.

Between freshman Colette Franck — who served the first 18 points of the set — and Maxwell, the Shorewomen tallied six aces in the third set.

Franck claimed two match-bests with 13 digs and five aces. Maxwell took the match-high for kills, tallying 12. Sophomores Angelina Schaber and Riley McHugh led the Shorewomen in blocks, both notching two.

Washington College followed their first Conference victory with a non-Conference victory in a home game against Alvernia University’s Golden Wolves on Oct. 7.

The Shorewomen started strong in the first set, coasting to a 12-point lead. A service error by the Golden Wolves clinched the opening set for the Shorewomen, 25–13.

The Golden Wolves rallied in the second set, winning at 25–23.

Leading 19-11 in the third set, the Shorewomen closed in on another win. Hitting a three-point run, Schaber gave the Shorewomen a 26–25 advantage with a kill; Maxwell closed the set at 27–25.

The final set was dominated by the Shorewomen. Franck ended the match with a kill, finalizing a 12-point lead for the Shorewomen and a 25–13 win.

Maxwell claimed a match-high of 15 kills. Other game leaders included Daunoras with nine blocks and Fairchild with 16 digs and four aces.

Next, the Shorewomen faced the in-Conference Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Oct. 9. The Diplomats ended the Shorewomen’s win streak, sweeping them 3–0.

In the first set, the Diplomats rushed to a 12–2 lead. While the Shorewomen shrank the gap to 15–10, the Diplomats took a 10–2 run and closed the set 25–12.

The Shorewomen pushed back in the second set, tying the Diplomats 6–6. However, the Diplomats took the lead again and won the set 25–14 for the hosts.

The third set saw the Diplomats dominating again. Leading 13–9, the Diplomats netted eight consecutive points, claiming a 21–9 advantage. The Diplomats closed the set and match, 25–12.

Fairchild claimed a match-high of 16 digs. Maxwell and Daunoras led with four kills. Schaber, Maxwell, Daunoras and freshman Lindsay Saddic each topped in blocks with one each. Both Fairchild and Maxwell led with two service aces.

The Shorewomen faced another Conference defeat on Oct. 13 in an away game against Swarthmore College’s Garnet, losing 3–0.

A service error by the Shorewomen lost the first set at 25-13.

The second set was tighter, the Garnet leading 22–21. They took the final three points of the set for a 25–21 win.

The Shorewomen pressed the Garnet again in the third. However, Swarthmore claimed 10 of the last 13 points, clinching a 25–18 win.

For game leaders, McHugh had three blocks, while Maxwell led with seven kills and two service aces. Maxwell and Fairchild both led in digs, claiming seven each.

The last game of the week saw the Shorewomen facing off with Gettysburg College’s Bullets at home on Oct. 16, losing 3–1.

While the Shorewomen kept the first set close, the Bullets ended it at 25–21.

Gettysburg took the second set too, clinching a 15-point victory at 25–10.

The third set saw the Shorewomen trailing at a 19–17 disadvantage; however, they rallied with an 8–3 run to win the set, 25–22.

The final set saw the Bullets leading again at 18–17 and won the set and match at 25-19.

Fairchild set a career-high of 21 digs, while Maxwell and Daunoras led the Shorewomen with 12 kills and four blocks. Seniors Lauren Zedlar and Jensyn Hartzell tied at two for most service aces. The Shorewomen play next on their Senior Day at the Cain Gymnasium on Oct. 23 against the Muhlenberg College Mules.
