The Washington College men’s basketball team returned for their 2021-22 season over winter break with an assortment of challenging games. All games were Centennial Conference matches.
The Shoremen were upset by the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Jan. 11 with a final score of 85–66. On Jan. 13, they were defeated by the Garnets, 98–47.
The Shoremen challenged the Muhlenberg College Mules on Jan. 15, where the game was forced into overtime. They lost at 87-74. Next, the Shoremen took on the McDaniel College Green Terror on Jan. 18. The final score was 76–45, Green Terror.
On Jan. 22, the Shoremen saw victory against the Gettysburg College Bullets on their home court. The final score of the game ended at 70–63, Shoremen.
The team-high for points was earned by sophomore Kendrick Frink who scored 17 points. Sophomore Sam Corrao was close behind with 16 points. Seniors Tray Wright and Dilyn Becker tied with a team-high of four assists each.
On the first day of the academic school year, Jan. 24, the Shoremen played the Ursinus College Bears at the Penny J. Fall Gymnasium. The teams were neck and neck throughout the game, but the Bears ultimately won, 74–71.
Frink and Becker tied with a team-high of 16 points scored each. Frink also earned nine rebounds and four steals, both team-highs. Wright and freshman Precieux Tshibangu scored double-digits at 13 and 10.
On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Shoremen competed against the Haverford College Fords, where they were once again defeated at 71–61. Sophomore Jason Zielinski led the team with 17 points; Becker, Frink, and Wright all scored in double-digits as well.
The Shoremen traveled to Lancaster, Pa. on Jan. 29 to compete against the Diplomats for the second time this season, but were bested at 69-55. Frink scored 17 points, Corrao scored 11, and Becker rebounded five balls during the game.
These games left the Shoremen’s overall record at 4–14 and their Conference record at 1–10. The Shoremen will play again on Saturday, Feb. 5, against the Dickinson College Devils in the Cain Gymnasium at 4 p.m. WC men’s basketball alumni will be honored with a ceremony before the game.
The WC women’s basketball team returned to play on Jan. 5 against the Bears, who they beat, 64–52. On Jan. 8, the Shorewomen bested the Devils by four points at 48–42.
The Bryn Mawr College Owls were defeated by the Shorewomen with a final score of 69–16 on Jan. 11. The Shorewomen also defeated the Green Terror on Jan. 19 at 71–66.
On Jan. 22, the Shorewomen’s win streak was broken by the Bullets. The ending score was 70–61.
The Shorewomen’s first game of the spring semester was played on Tuesday, Jan. 25 against the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays, where they were bested again at 58–35. Sophomore Serena Pluta earned the team-high of 11 points and three blocks.
Next, the Shorewomen faced the Fords on Thursday, Jan. 27, who led the entire game and won 65–39. Pluta had another standout game, in which she earned her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Shorewomen’s season record remains at 11–6 and their Conference record at 7–5. They play again on Saturday, Feb. 2, against the Devils at 2 p.m. in the Cain Gymnasium. The Shorewomen will also be celebrating their alumni.
