80 years ago:

April 17, 1942: “Chestertown’s famous ‘panel house’ The Abbey, will see life again according to information received today from Mrs. Charles W. Whaland. Standing at the lower end of Front Street, The Abbey, widely known for its famous staircase and panelling, has been closed for years with the exception of occasional opening for a showing to visiting historical groups.”

50 years ago:

April 14, 1972: “Earlier this week the Board of Publications announced that Kevin O’Keefe is the newly appointed Editor-In-Chief of The Elm. O’Keefe, a sophomore from Parkville, Maryland was promoted from news editor and will succeed Geoff Anderson at the top position.” 

40 years ago:

April 16, 1982: “After officially becoming a member of the College at the beginning of this month, President-elect Douglas Cater has held meetings with administrators and faculty as he prepares to assume the full duties of President of the College on July 1.”

10 years ago:

April 20, 2012: “Students frequently pop back to their rooms to grab books between classes, but on Tuesday, April 10, many darted to Washington College parking lots to check on their cars after Public Safety sent an email advising the campus of incidents of vandalism.”

5 years ago: April 14, 2017: “On Tuesday, April 4, the Rose O’Neill Literary House hosted poet and activist Phyllis Rackin for a talk titled “Feminism is Everywhere” as a part of the Sophie Kerr Lecture Series. Rackin is known as an intellectual feminist icon and renowned Shakespeare scholar.”
