Rowing hosts several Division I, II, and III teams for Washington College Invitational

The Washington College 2022 spring season-opener commenced on Saturday, March 26. The Shoremen hosted their annual Washington College Invitational. Although the beginning of their season, this was also the Senior Day for the Shoremen as it is their only regatta occurring on the Chester River.

They celebrated seniors Eric Botti, Sean Curry, Jason Economidis, Jack Lee, and Max Moore.

The men’s varsity eight won their first race of the day with a time of 5:59.94. The Grand Final race was taken by Adrian College with a time of 5:43.20, closely followed by the Shoremen with a time of 5:44.10 in second.

The boat included Lee at the cox and Curry at the stroke with (in seat order) junior Nick Gardner, sophomore Eli Bisco-Werner, Moore, freshman Hunter Federick, freshman Markus Norberg, sophomore Garrett Cole, and sophomore Emmett Wurster on the boat.

The men’s varsity four boat placed fourth in their race with a time of 6:58.46.

The Shorewomen sailing team also  participated in their WC Invitational for their spring season-opener and Senior Day. They honored seniors Analiese Bush, Skyler Hancock, Caroline Jackson, Kitri Post, Cassidy Predale, and Sylvie Randall.

The women’s varsity eight, first team, placed third in the Grand Final race with a time of 7:03.95. Wellesley College earned first, 6:22.8, and Thomas Jefferson University took second, 6:43.37.

This boat had juniors Olivia Payne at the cox and Mackenzi Westfield at the stroke. In order, junior Brooklyn Horine, Jackson, freshman Alex Szynal, Predale, junior Sophia Rooks, Bush, and freshman Ella Yeigh filled the rest of the boat.

The second women’s varsity eight team also placed third in their Grand Final. They fell behind Wellesley College’s two second teams, who had times of 6:51.30 and 7:10.01. The Shorewomen finished with a time of 7:19.72.

Overall, the Shorewomen placed third out of nine teams.

Both WC rowing teams will return to the water again on Saturday, April 2, in Cooper River, N.J., to compete for the Murphy Cup.
