Shorewomen field hockey tops Dickinson in final game of the season

Shorewomen field hockey took on the Dickinson College Red Devils at home for their Senior Day on Oct. 28. 

Prior to the start of the game, the Shorewomen recognized their graduating class: forward Jillian Brejnik, midfielder Anna Harrington, midfielder Kyra Heap, defender Tatum Schatt, forward Julianna Sterling, defender Jo Robinson, and midfielder Marah Vain-Callahan.  

The first period was off to a slow start with neither team scoring in the first six minutes. The Shorewomen began to pressure their opponents as the game went into minute seven. Heap took the first shot of the game which was blocked by Dickinson defenders. 

Before the period ended, Brejnik brought the ball to Dickinson’s goal and scored her seventh goal of the season. The Shorewomen headed into the break with leading the Devils 1-0.  

As the second period started, the Devils found their rhythm and held the Shorewomen off from gaining momentum. Dickinson took a shot on goal in minute 15; it was saved by junior goalkeeper Ava Rivera. 

In minute 21, the Devils found their way down the field again to take another shot on goal that was saved by Rivera. Six minutes after, Dickinson scored on their third attempt, concluding the second period 1-1. 

Three minutes after halftime, freshman midfielder MaryCate Anson connected with senior forward Julianna Sterling for the Shorewomen’s second goal of the game.  

The Shorewomen’s next shot on goal came in minute 39 from senior midfielder Anna Harrington; it was blocked by the Devils’ goalkeeper. Dickinson began pressuring in the following minute, resulting in a shot on goal that was blocked by Rivera. 

During minute 42, sophomore forward Kat Esposito broke through the Devils’ defense to take a shot on goal that was blocked. Not even a minute later, Esposito ripped another shot that got past the Dickinson goalie with an assist from Harrington, making the score 3-1 at the end of the third period. 

The fourth period started with the Shorewomen picking up where they left off with a shot on goal from sophomore midfielder Zoe Shevitz, blocked by the Devils’ keeper. For the remainder of the game, the Shorewomen put on a defensive clinic with Rivera recording two saves and freshman midfielder Jules Weglarz blocking a shot. The fourth period ended with a final score of 3-1 with the Shorewomen on top. 

The team ended their regular season with a win over Dickinson with two of their seniors scoring on their day of recognition. Following this game, the Shorewomen look to make a run in the Centennial Conference playoffs with their first game against Ursinus College on Nov. 1
