The Shorewomen closed out their season with two losses against Centennial Conference competitors Dickinson University and McDaniel College.
On Wednesday, Oct 26. the Shoremen traveled to McDaniel and lost 2-1 to the Green Terror, which is ranked fourth in the Conference.
The Green Terror scored the first two goals of the game. In minute 13, they placed the ball in the right side of the goal past the freshman goalkeeper Hailey Sharpe. They scored again in minute 51 off a header from a corner kick.
The Shorewomen attempted a comeback when, two minutes after the Green Terror’s second goal, junior midfielder Audrey Flanagan crossed the ball into the box and senior midfielder Katie King ripped the shot in the upper right corner of the goal. The score then stood at 2-1.
The Shorewomen had two more chances to tie the game in the second half, but both were unsuccessful. Flanagan’s and senior midfielder Ellie Morrall’s shots were saved by the Green Terror goalkeeper in the last 20 minutes of the game.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Shorewomen hosted the Dickinson Red Devils for the final game of the regular season. The Shorewomen were evenly matched with the Red Devils for much of the game. Both teams took seven shots and possession was even throughout the game.
The Red Devils came out strong in the start of the first half taking two shots before the Shorewomen took their first in minute 34. All three of these shots went wide. The Shorewomen responded to the Red Devils early aggression and had control for the end of the first half and start of the second half.
The Shorewomen had their closest chance to score off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Kayla Street. Senior goalkeeper Gillian Slavick, who played forward, headed the ball, which was deflected by the Red Devil’s goalkeeper and cleared by the defense. This was the Shorewomen’s only shot on target.
Despite the even match up for most of the game, the Red Devils were able to score off a corner kick in minute 60. The shot went over the head of freshman goalkeeper Hailey Sharpe and placed the Red Devils ahead at 1-0. This was the only goal of the game.
In minute 75 of the game, the Red Devils had a chance to increase their lead when they received a direct kick from a yellow card against Sharpe. Sharpe saved the shot.
The Shorewomen were not able to respond to the Red Devils goal and lost 1-0. This victory placed the Red Devils as the number two seed going into the Conference tournament.
The Shorewomen also celebrated their senior day before their game against the Red Devils. They recognized senior goalkeeper Gillian Slavick; defender Racel Chatfield, midfielders Lauren Maynor, Katie King, Elena Hilario, and Ellie Morrall; and forward Paige O’Connell. Slavick was named Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Game.
The Shorewomen will not advance to the Centennial Conference tournament. They ended their season with an overall record of 6-5-6 and their conference record of 2-4-4. This season’s record marks the second most successful winning record for the Shorewomen.
