The Washington College men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to McDaniel College for a Centennial Conference game. The Shorewomen dominated in the fourth quarter leading them to victory while the Shoremen fell short.
The Shorewomen were led by senior guard Joy Sanders who scored 21 points and recorded three steals. Senior guard Andrea Prestianne assisted in the team’s win with 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Senior forward Lizzie Hudock also earned a career high of 16 points and six rebounds in the game.
In the first half of the game, the Shorewomen and the Green Terror were neck and neck, with neither team leading by more than six points at a time. The first half ended with the Shorewomen leading by only one point.
The Shorewomen and the Green Terror remained close for the first part of the third quarter until the Shorewomen broke ahead with an eight point rally started by sophomore guard Karry Kelliher.
The Green Terror responded with five points and the third quarter ended with the Shorewomen only leading 41-29.
Freshman center Kaitlyn Boggs led an eight point rally at the start of the fourth quarter with a jumper in the paint, a steal, a block, and two rebounds. In the last three minutes of the game, the Green Terror made a comeback by scoring 10 points.
The Green Terror’s effort was not enough to dig themselves out of their hole thanks to the Shorewomen outscoring them 21-13 in the fourth. The Shorewomen beat the host team 62-52.
Following the women’s win, the men’s team played against the Green Terror at 3 pm.
In the first ten minutes of the half, the two teams remained within 2 points of each other until freshman guard Davis Bland took the Shoremens largest lead in the game on a three-pointer. However, the Green Terror would go to score the next 11 points, making the score 20-13 with 8 minutes remaining in the half.
Junior guard Kedrick Frink made a buzzer beater to end the first half with a pass by senior forward Nick Romeo. The half ended with the Shoremen trailing the Green Terror 33-26.
The Shoremen started the second half strong, closing the Green Terror’s lead to 37-33 with 15 minutes left in the half. The Green Terror scored 12 of the last 16 points in the game securing their victory over the Shoremen.
The Shoremen only recorded a 30.2 field goal percentage and a 23.1 three-point percentage compared to McDaniel, who posted 51.9% and 31.3% respectively.
Frink emerged as the leader of the Shoremen with 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Freshman guard Ryan Lang also recorded five rebounds, tying him with Frink for most in the game. Junior guard Jason Zielinski also secured nine points for the Shoremen.
The Shorewomen now have a 7-4 in Conference play with a 11-5 overall record. This now places them in fifth place in the Conference. The Shoremen are now 1-8 and 2-13 respectively. Both teams are about halfway through their season and will face eight other Conference competitors in the upcoming weeks.
