The Student Government Association advertised their bi-annual Spirit Week in the lead up to Birthday Ball, encouraging students to get involved with their peers and campus community.
From Monday, Feb. 20 to Friday, Feb. 24, Washington College students, staff, and faculty dressed up to match themes, which varied depending on the day. Maroon Monday started the festivities, promoting school spirit through encouragement to wear WC-related gear.
Twinnin Tuesday saw matching outfits around campus, while Wednesday gave the class years different colors to wear – black for seniors, pink for juniors, blue for sophomores, and purple for freshmen, with administration, faculty, and staff wearing orange. Thursday, students dressed as their favorite faculty, staff, or administrator. Friday closed off the week with an all-white Winter Wonderland theme.
Twinnin Tuesday
Sophomores Karli Oates and Zoe Laughlin. Oates: “We decided to twin because we had biology lab together that day and we thought it would be fun to do twin day together as roommates. It was simple, easy, and a comfortable outfit too, so it was a win- win.”
Class Colors Wednesday
Sophomore Kaitlin Osucha : “I think it’s fun for students to participate and to all come together, and dress up, and show school spirit for our school. I participated in twinning day because my roommate [Elm Student Life editor sophomore] Heather [Fabritze] and I got to wear our matching sweater. Also, school color day because I got to wear my favorite blue sweatshirt…I think it’s a fun way to get ready for Birthday Ball and count down the days until the dance.”
Favorite Faculty/Staff/Administrator Thursday
Junior Laurel Krause: “[Sophomore] Morgan Carlson emailed every person in our class to dress up as Dr. [Martin] Connaughton and we all did. And we had an exam that day but it was funny.”
Winter Wonderland Friday
Senior Shannon Salandy: “I think [Spirit Week] is important because school spirit is something that could help drive the morale of the college up. I wish more people participated…I think Spirit Week is a good idea to do leading up to Birthday Ball.”
