A pair of Washington College road wins kicked the lacrosse season off, one from the men’s team and the other from the women’s team.
The Shoremen kicked off their season in St. David’s Pennsylvania against Eastern College. The Shoremen fell to a 3-1 deficit early in the game, however, they were able to flip the game and not look back.
“The team was prepared for everything Eastern would throw at us, so we relied on what we went over in practice the entire week,” senior Kain Domenech said.
Domenech, who contributed 3 goals for the Shoremen, credits his performance to his mentality. “I let the game come to me, tried not to force anything, and only made the simple plays all game,” he said.
The Shoremen ended up with a 16-12 victory over Eastern. Spearheading the effort was junior Connor Garrison. Garrison led the Shoremen with five goals on the afternoon.
“I had a match up that I was able to take advantage of and my teammates were able to get the ball to me. I get the glory of being a scorer on the stat sheet, but all my teammates deserve the credit,” Garrison said.
Meanwhile, the Shorewomen took their show on the road as well to Madison, New Jersey. They started firing early and never looked back as they soared to a 17-4 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham.
The leading scorer on the evening was senior Ellie Morrall. She notched five goals in the opening day victory, the second consecutive opening day win for the team.
Morrall said the game was a “statement” win. “Beating them 17-4 was awesome and sent a statement to all the other teams we’re playing that we aren’t going to be an easy win,” she said.
Morrall also reached 100 career draw wins in the opening day victory. She became the thirteenth player in program history to achieve such a feat.
“I have always loved being on the circle and doing draws to hit that milestone was cool,” Morrall said.
Contributions came from throughout the roster as a plethora of players that had strong performances. The breakout player of the game proved to be freshman Anna Wilson. Wilson would score 73 seconds into the game off her first shot to put the Shorewomen up 1-0.
“I didn’t really think, I just went for it. It’s what we practice every day,” Wilson said.
Wilson would finish with three scores and an assist to end the night. “It was a moment I have been looking forward to for a long time,” Wilson said.
The Shoremen and Shorewomen also played on Saturday, Feb. 25 at home. The men’s team lost a highly contested game against Washington and Lee University, falling to 1-1. The Shorewomen emerged victorious against visiting Stevenson, improving to 2-0.
