At the end of March, Washington College Campus Recreation started up the spring Floor Hockey intramural season, with six teams competing in hopes of being named IM champions.

The floor hockey league is one of WC’s final IM sports for the year. Past leagues have included flag football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Going into playoffs, the High Noon Hockey team is in the top seeded position. The team is composed of staff and faculty of the College including professors, athletic department coaches, and staff from the Office of Student Engagement and the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience.

Ranked in second with only one loss is The Unreleased Geese, which is made up of members of the Shorewomen’s Field Hockey team, including head coach Anne Kietzman.

Captain senior Julianna Sterling said she has enjoyed being able to take on tough competition with her actual teammates through the IM league.

“My favorite part has been playing with the field hockey team again,” Sterling said. “Especially getting to be on the court with our coaches, too, is a lot of fun. We thought with our field hockey background we’d have an absolute head up on the competition, but [High Noon Hockey] has brought out a lot of fire…We’re looking forward to the playoffs and can’t wait to play our rivals again.”

With the staff and field hockey team entering the playoffs ranked first and second, there is a good chance the two teams will face off again. In their previous match up, the High Noon Hockey team beat the Unreleased Geese 15-2.

Senior Kayleigh Maimone is competing with members of her sorority Zeta Tau Alpha. Their team is called the Zlammers. The sorority has entered a team in almost every IM sport this year and continued the pattern for floor hockey.

“We really enjoyed being on the ZTA team last year so we could not wait to create a team again this year,” Maimone said. “This season, we had even more fun spending time with each other during games and especially enjoyed playing the Kappa Sigma team.”

The Zlammers were recently eliminated from the playoffs by Rogue 2 in a close 5-4 match. Rogue 2 is composed of Kappa Sigma brothers and is captained by sophomore Quin Kauffman.

Kauffman said that he enjoys the league because it allows him to play alongside his brothers.

“The favorite part for me of being on this team is the sense of common purpose amongst everyone,” Kauffman said. “We all are striving to work together, and this is a continuation of our work together as members of our fraternity.”

The semi finals for floor hockey were held on Tuesday, April 25 with top ranked High Noon Hockey playing Rogue 2, which is seeded fourth. The Released Geese and The Unpuckwitables competed in the other semifinal match up on Wednesday, April 26. The winners of both matches advanced to the finals.

The championship game and the winner of the coveted “I am Champion” IM shirt will be decided on Thursday, April 27 at 8 p.m. in Cain Athletic Center.

IM sports will resume in the fall semester, providing more opportunities for students to get involved in athletics in a fun and easy manner.
