This fall, the ever popular intramural soccer season kicked off. Intramural sports are unofficial competitions between various teams of students held on WC’s campus.
Teams can be formed by groups of people, or you can sign up individually through the campus groups site. Certain organizations like the Phi Delta Theta and Kappa Sigma Omicron fraternity formed teams as well as the team made up of WC baseball players.
Junior Quin Kauffman is the captain of the Kappa Sigma team, the Dorchball Enthusiasts. “Intramural Sports is a great stepping stone into getting more people involved and more physically active,” Kauffman said.
Director of Campus Recreation Evan Clayton said, “It’s a great way to meet people who are interested in sports and keep involved.” Clayton added that keeping active on campus is a great way to keep making new friends.
“I think IM sports are important for students to be competitive and active on campus as well as forming bonds,” Lil Lobsters team member sophomore Joshua Iseminger said.
The bonds formed through these events are important, especially to first years and students who might be trying something new.
“Through my experience I’ve had plenty of fun getting to know other students through IM sports,” Iseminger said.
Students can also come to Kibler Field and watch their friends compete.
“We have a really good crowd of people who come to support, which is really nice. I always really appreciate it,” Kauffman said. He approximates the attendance at anywhere from thirty to forty people, from friends or other teams who are not playing that night.
Those who enjoy a friendly competition are more than welcome to get involved. The competitive nature of sports allows fun competition to take place between teams.
“It also promotes the competitive spirit of the college and overall a sense of fun. And just good vibes, which is something that’s very important around the college,” Kauffman said. “I find it important, the spirit of competition always brings out the best in people.”
Intramural sports take place throughout the year and include sports like basketball, flag football, and even badminton. “As for IM sports I’m looking forward to, I think flag football and dodgeball will be fun,” Iseminger said.
“Our next announced sport is volleyball. That will be played indoors on the back court of the gym [in the Cain Gymnasium],” Clayton said. After volleyball, students should be on the lookout for ultimate frisbee and flag football with badminton coming around Thanksgiving.
