Washington College men’s soccer pulled out two wins against the Swarthmore College Garnet and the Ursinus College Bears on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 30, closing out the month 5-0-5.
In their first win of the week against Swarthmore, the Shoremen boasted their efficiency with nine shots, four of which were on target, compared to the Garnets’ five shots on goal over 17 attempts.
The team’s first goal came in the fifteenth minute. After an assist from senior midfielder Harrison Malone, sophomore forward Shepherd Koffie scored following a brief scramble in front of Swarthmore’s goal after a corner kick.
With the Shoremen up 1-0, the team scored another time before the half was over. In the thirty-fourth minute, junior midfielder Katim Njie scored his fourth goal of the season thanks to an assist from fellow junior midfielder Dominic Miller. This brought the score at the end of the first half to 2-0.
Swarthmore’s first and only goal came in the forty-eighth minute from a penalty kick, where a Garnet attacker helped push the ball past senior goalkeeper Anthony Pinto.
The remainder of the game consisted of two yellow cards on both teams, resulting in a stalemate in the last 42 minutes of regulation.
Other notable performances came from senior midfielder Ben Strine, taking three shots on goal, and Pinto, who made four saves against the Garnets.
The Shoremen earned their fourth win of the season and prepared for their next game on Saturday at home.
The team’s next game was against the Ursinus Bears on Sept. 30. The Shoremen’s offense showed up in a relentless fashion, giving them the win over their opponents, 2-0.
After a scoreless first half, the Shoremen found their footing, scoring in the forty-seventh minute thanks to senior midfielder Cole Gifford’s goal, assisted by Njie.
WC’s second goal came following a yellow card on Ursinus in the fifty-sixth minute, allowing for senior defender Chris Comber to score. Comber’s goal was assisted by senior midfielder Harrison Malone.
Other Shoremen who performed well were senior midfielder Ben Strine, who recorded three shots on goal, and goalkeeper Pinto, who made two saves and gave the team their fourth clean sheet of the season.
WC’s next game is at home on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4:00 p.m. against the Haverford College Black Squirrels. The Shoremen are 11-15-4 all-time against their opponent but have won the last two games against them.
