The African Student Union held their first-ever UNO tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Egg in Hodson Hall.
While many students are used to the various bingo events that occur on campus, the ASU decided to mix it up with a UNO tournament, in which small groups would play rounds of UNO against each other for the chance of winning prizes.
“We were trying to make an event that was fun for the whole campus but also different… there’s a lot of bingos out there and stuff, so a different fun game that people would enjoy playing and win prizes,” ASU president senior Silvana Tipson said.
The prizes for the event included a JBL speaker, Beats headphones, a projector, a Nike gift card, a Bath and Body Works gift card, a blender, and a backpack.
Junior Justin Fitzpatrick was among the prize-winners of the night, winning a projector for his performance in the tournament.
“It was awesome to see a lot of different students at the event and having a good time playing UNO,” Fitzpatrick said. “I think prizes always bring people out to events because I know that’s the reason why I was there. But I did enjoy my time with my friends competing for the prizes.”
Along with being the first major UNO tournament on campus, this marks the first big function hosted by ASU this semester, with Tipson calling the positive turnout.
“We have a lot of big events coming up this semester,” Tipson said. “For one, we’re trying to have a fake wedding, so two of our members are getting ‘married,’ so it’s gonna be a really big event. We’re gonna have a lot of really good food and performances, so people should look out for that.”
