Petition made and signed by student body for new DJ at next Birthday Ball

Birthday Ball is a Washington College tradition akin to the stereotypical high school prom, in which the students at WC dress in their best gowns and suits and take to the dance floor with their friends. Usually occurring in February, the past few Birthday Balls have had themes such as Cosmic Constellations, the Queen’s Ball, and Go Nuts (a squirrel-themed Birthday Ball to celebrate the furry friends on campus).

According to a blurb written by sophomore Nora Beebe on the WC website, “Largely regarded as the Washington College social event of the year, Birthday Ball is a night of friendship, fun, and entertainment.”

Every year when Birthday Ball comes around, so does an anonymous petition. It appears in students’ email inboxes, under dormitory doors, and hidden on the back of restroom doors. The petition is for the DJ at the Birthday Ball.

After midnight, when the Birthday Ball comes to an end, a flood of complaints can be heard echoing around Martha Washington Square. Every complaint is usually about the former DJ at Birthday Ball.

“They only played ‘Hotel Room Service’ by Pitbull once this year,” sophomore Jenna Harper said. “Only once! I mean, that’s crazy. It needs to play at least twice.”

The petitions this year were signed by almost the entire student body, showing the massive discouragement from students for WC President Mike Sosquirrelski choosing the performer for the so-called event of the year.

This year’s petition was not only in favor of creating a DJ committee made up of students, but also to nominate next year’s disk jockey: DJ Buck Nasty.

While some may know him as the everyday omelet slinger at Creations Chef Station in Hodson Hall, DJ Buck Nasty can whip up a nice hot meal as well as a sick beat.

“I would love to DJ at Birthday Ball,” Buck said. “They’ve never asked me too, though, but I know y’all. I know the students.”

The petition included signatures from faculty members, the rats in the labs in Toll, as well as various squirrel organizations on campus.

“I think Buck could be a good fit,” Harper said. “If he plays ‘Hotel Room Service.’ I need me some Pitbull.”
