Washington College softball took on the Marymount University Saints for a double-header at home on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The second game was called early due to the time of day and ended in a tie. The first game was played in full and ended in a 10-6 Shorewomen victory.

The first of two banner plays in the doubleheader was a grand slam from sophomore Gracelyn Goforth in the inaugural inning. The second inning saw career hit number 100 from senior Hanna Solge. Solge’s hit allowed Junior Chloe Trefz to add another run to the scoreboard making the total after two 5-1.

After starting 1-0-1, the Shorewomen traveled to Fredericksburg Va. to do battle with the Mary Washington Eagles. The two squads tied their doubleheader in as WC took the second outing, while the Eagles nabbed the first game.

“I believe we wanted to start off strong at home…when we traveled we didn’t have the same, super strong mindset,” Goforth said.

Sophmore Jenna Harper was one of two runners to score off errors in the game, which put the contest at a 3-0 margin. Joining her in the effort was sophomore Neveah Unzueta.

“In the first game against Mary Washington, our energy was not where it needed to be. We were scattered and not completely immersed in that first game. We tried to coast, and were met with a loss,” Harper said. “Going into the second game, a flip switched. We knew we couldn’t let what had happened happen again. So we put ourselves in check and gave everything we had into that second game. Cheering our teammates on, taking risks, and using our heads and hearts to win that game.”

The Shorewomen went winless on the road in a doubleheader outing in Lynchburg, Va. against the Hornets. The first game ended in a 7-0 shutout in favor of Lynchburg, followed up by a 9-1 Hornets win in six innings.

“We played Mary Washington and Lynchburg, two very highly ranked teams. Our coach told the team at the beginning of the season that our schedule is going to be extremely difficult, but she knows that we are up for the challenge,” Harper said.

WC will take their show on the road on spring break, going to Kissimmee, Fl. The squad is scheduled to play in 10 contests over the week spanning from March 10 until March 15.
