Spring is a time for new beginnings, warmer weather, and new fashion, leading some Washington College students to invest in new clothes for the changing season.

Along with the changing weather, new fashion trends are beginning to pop up like the first flowers on campus. With micro and macro-trends, spring is becoming a difficult season to pin down in terms of an overall idea or theme.

Do not worry, though — there are still some identifiable commonalities that can allow one to be chic and stay on top of the trends.

Some obvious go-tos for the spring include lighter colors, such as white and light blue for a simple but elegant approach, but if vibrance is your style, trends show that the reds and yellows will allow one to stand out while staying stylish.

Publications like Vogue, Glamour, and Forbes are all in agreement on the importance of dresses, specifically lighter sundresses with puffy sleeves. If dresses are not your style, pencil skirts are on their way up as well.

If neither of those really fits your vibe, spring 2024 fashion is also introducing classics such as trench coats. According to Vogue, “Off the runway, the look is easily achieved with designs from contemporary labels and high street brands alike.”

For college students, acquiring such a high fashion look in the past required a bit more money, but in 2024, all fashion trends will make their way down from designer brands to more easily accessible and affordable stores such as Target.

There is also a chance to scour your local thrift store for similar items, especially since 2024 introduces a retro look, with collared polos and fringe making their way back into popularity.

According to Glamour, “Experts say this year’s trends, like the disco decadence of sequins and the return of grade-school staples like bows and preppy polos, follow the same arc, but with a little more playfulness this time around.”

With these trends, it is important to focus on what keeps coming back and make sure, if you are willing to spend the big bucks, that you spend it on items that remain timeless, such as the white dresses and sleek tailored suits.

In terms of popular patterns, botanicals, specifically roses, are climbing in popularity in all articles of clothing, from rose designs on bags to flowers blooming off shoes.

With this style, there is no lack of different ways to stylize it. According to Forbes, “There were botanical prints of all varieties: some were eye-popping and vibrant, while others were more dramatic and hyperrealist.”

The spring 2024 fashion season is one to be remembered, with a range of clothes, from modest to breezy and comfy to sleek, that suits everyone’s needs.

As the weather continues to slowly climb on campus and all the rain finally brings some flowers, keep a keen eye out for trends that will continue to crop up as designers and the media alike begin favoring certain colors or styles in the future.
