Washington College women’s lacrosse picked up their first home win since Feb. 28 in an overtime nailbiter against the Dickinson College Red Devils.
WC entered the matchup in a must-win scenario, as the Centennial Conference playoffs beginning next week.
The team snapped a four game losing streak — as many losses as they took in their previous campaign. The win marks a big turning point for the team late in the season.
“I think just keep putting in the work and going one hundred and ten percent all the time. I think building off the team’s positivity and consistency helps every day,” sophomore midfielder Anna Wilson said.
Coming off four consecutive in-conference losses, the squad was on the outside looking into the playoff bracket. Conversely, the Red Devils were in a favorable position at fourth in the conference and only sitting behind the three nationally ranked groups consisting of Gettysburg College, Franklin and Marshall College, and Haverford College.
The game opened up with a 3-0 first quarter shutout courtesy of the visiting Red Devils. WC responded with an 8 goal performance in the second quarter to take the lead into halftime.
Sophomore attackwoman Mia Salvatierra continued her impressive season with a second quarter goal to give the Shorewomen their first lead of the afternoon. Salvatierra has a team high 30 goals and averages almost two assists per game, the ninth best average in the Centennial Conference.
Salvatierra teamed up with junior attacker Tobin Chambers for three goals in the effort. The previous times Chambers netted four or more goals were a pair of wins against Carroll, (Wi.) and in their Centennial Conference opening victory against Ursinus.
Senior attackwoman Ellie Bossi notched the final WC goal of the third period to send them ahead 15-8.
Bossi, playing in her senior daygame for WC, added her ninth career goal, fourth of the 2024 campaign.
“I’ve loved being a part of such a special community on this campus, and I will cherish this memory forever. These past four years have been incredible for me and my family. To get a win and a goal on senior day was just the icing on top of that cake,” Bossi said.
The game was a big day for fellow senior midfielder Abby Laubach. She added three goals and a pair of assists in the efort, along with a pair of critical draw controls to give the Shorewomen extra possessions.
The final quarter saw a 7-1 run by the Red Devils to tie the game late and send the contest to overtime. The overtime rules are simple: score first.
The extra period lasted 22 seconds.
Sophomore midfielder MaryCate Anson dropped the final goal on a breakaway showcase of her speed.
Laubach found her teammate for her second assist, allowing Anson to shoot over the top of the visiting goalkeeper, to secure the walk off win.
WC will go on the road to take on the McDaniel Green Terror on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
