Washington College field hockey bounced back with a 1-0 victory over the Muhlenberg College Mules on Oct. 26. Previously, the Shorewomen were routed by the eleventh-ranked Owls of Bryn Mawr College on Oct. 23. The Shorewomen improved to 9-7 overall, and 4-4 in Centennial Conference play.
WC entered the day trying to keep pace with the Haverford College Fords, who are tied at 4-4 in conference play.
“I think the atmosphere when we play at home is a whole different level because we know we have people there watching us and we don’t have the added stress of traveling to another school so we can get energized and game-focused even sooner,” sophomore midfielder Natalie Watkinson said.
The Shorewomen bested the Fords on Oct. 9, therefore holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Six teams make the final playoff bracket, and the tiebreaker puts the Shorewomen at sixth.
WC took 12 shots in the first half, while the Mules could only get two on the board. The squads entered the break tied at 0-0.
In the third quarter, senior forward Kat Esposito took control of the ball just past the midfield stripe, taking the ball down the right sideline before letting a shot go from 12 yards out.
Esposito would find the back of the net, for her conference leading sixth game winning goal of the season.
Esposito is just two points away from the century mark in career points. Meaning one goal or two assists would propel her to the hundredth point.
The Shorewomen honored their pair of seniors, Esposito and midfielder Zoe Shevitz, before the contest. Shevitz took two shots in the victory as well. Both seniors started all 16 games played so far in the 2024 campaign.
The duo of seniors will lead their teams against the Swarthmore college Garnet on Oct. 30 and the Gettysburg College Bullets on Nov. 2.
Swarthmore currently sits at second in the Conference and Gettysburg resides at eighth.
The Shorewomen can punch their ticket to the postseason with a pair of wins to round out the regular season.
