Shoremen basketball returned to action this past weekend on Nov. 8 and 9.
Washington College is off to an 0-2 start to their season following a road trip to Bronxville, N.Y. for the annual Sarah Lawrence Academic Classic. The Shoremen lost to John Jay College 70-56 and Bard College 67-51.
Freshman guard Nolan Waldon put up 30 points over the weekend, leading the team. Freshman forward Ty Woodland and senior forward Precieux Tshibangu combined for 19 total blocks over the weekend as well.
The Shoremen additionally held up at the 3 point line, only allowing a 36 percent opponent average from the arch.
However the team was beaten in the paint, with the squad only hitting on 36% of their field goals.
Looking ahead, the Shoremen have three games in five days, all of which are at home.
On Nov. 12, the Shoremen will host the Gallaudet University Bison, followed by the University of Valley Forge Patriots on Nov. 14, and the Bryn Athyn College Lions on Nov. 16.
“The team has done a nice job this preseason and has a solid blend of returners and newcomers. I would say the biggest difference this year is we have 16 student athletes who compete and communicate with one another at a high level. I have seen our care level increase and a shift in team spirit and attitude,” Head Coach Corey Begly said.
Begly enters his second season with the program, boasting a young team with seven total freshmen and nine combined upperclassmen.
The team is looking to improve from last season where they finished 4-21 overall, and 2-16 in Centennial Conference play. Due to a realignment within the Centennial, the Shoremen will only have 13 Conference games this season.
Playing out of conference opponents allows them the opportunity to test themselves against non-conference opponents with five extra games now on their schedule.
The Shoremen have a long campaign ahead, in which they will host 12 total home games this season.
At the end of November, the Shoremen will travel to Scranton, Pa. for the Electric City Showcase on Nov. 22 and 23.
Their annual exhibition game versus the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen will be on Nov. 25.
Conference play begins for the Shoremen Jan. 11 at Ursinus. The Shoremen were picked to finish tenth in the Centennial Conference preseason poll.
