Shorewomen basketball progressed in their season this week with matchups against Stevenson and Salisbury.
On Nov. 12, the Shorewomen lost their second game of the season to Stevenson 47-35.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, so the fact that it was close was not a surprise. Stevenson is a strong, aggressive team, and that was something that we had to adapt to,” junior center Kaitlyn Boggs said.
Junior guard Abby Meredith stood out with nine points and four steals, alongside junior guard Emma Robinson, who had five points and nine rebounds.
The first half of the game saw the Shorewomen trailing behind the Mustangs, as the Mustangs opened the game with a five-run jump. While Boggs was able to end their run with a pass from Robinson, the Shorewomen ended the first quarter down by three.
Robison made the first layup of the second half with a pass from Boggs. Followed by a shot from behind the three-point arc by senior forward Kierston Rose, the Shorewomen were briefly tied with the Mustangs 19-19.
This tie was brief; the Mustangs took the fourth quarter by storm.
While the loss against Stevenson was disappointing, Boggs said the team was hopeful for the weekend’s game.
“I think we are just preparing our mentality for the weekend. We are such a strong team with amazing players; we just need to keep our heads up when the shots aren’t falling. I think we have great energy, and if we play to our strengths, this will be a good weekend for us,” Boggs said following Tuesday’s game.
The Shorewomen took down Salisbury for the second time this season on Nov. 16, winning 56-44.
Meredith opened the scoring with a jumper from Kelliher, giving the Shorewomen a 2-0 lead. Boggs and sophomore guard Peyton Berger followed with additional baskets, and the Shorewomen finished the first quarter strong with a 12-4 lead.
The Shorewomen continued their momentum into the second quarter, going on a 12-2 run to extend their advantage to 24-11 at halftime.
In the sixth minute of the third quarter, Meredith scored consecutive baskets, extending the Shorewomen’s lead over the Sea Gulls to 30-15 and contributing seven points in the quarter.
Despite their efforts, the Sea Gulls struggled against the Shorewomen’s offense and ultimately lost 56-44, marking their second defeat to the Shorewomen this season.
Meredith and Boggs took the spotlight, with each posting 10 plus points. Meredith’s 17 points propelled her to Shorewoman of the Week for the third time in just two seasons with the program.
The Shorewomen will continue their season on the road, facing off against Penn State on Nov. 19.
