Shorewomen Basketball sees historic outing amid three game winning streak

The Shorewomen basketball team took home two wins last week against Penn State Abington and Gallaudet.

On Nov. 19, the Shorewomen faced Penn State Abington on the road , winning 77-63. As the game began, the Nittany Lions took an early 21-13 lead in the first quarter and 28-15 midway through the second.

The Shorewomen responded to this lead with a 21-6 run to tie the game  34-34. While the first half concluded with the Nittany Lions nursing a 39-36 lead at halftime, the Shorewomen gained control in the second half of the game, with junior guard Abby Meredith hitting a crucial three-pointer in the third quarter.

Facing a deficit of 13 points in the second quarter, the Shorewomen were led by junior center Kaitlyn Boggs, who scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, achieving a double-double.

“This was very exciting for me after the game. I think this just shows that our team can find a spark during any game. We can be down early, but we will never give up,” Boggs said.

Senior guard Kerry Kelliher also had a standout performance with 10 points and 12 assists, tying the team record for assists in a game.

“I feel like our performance this week has been a good showing of the hard work that we’ve been putting in during practice and what’s to come in future games,” senior forward Kiersten Rose said. “These victories reflect the collective effort and dedication in practice, as well as highlighting how well the team has been preparing both physically and mentally.

With the win, Washington College improved to 3-2 on the season, while Penn State Abington dropped to 1-1.

On Nov. 23, the Shorewomen went head-to-head with the Gallaudet University Bison, winning 61-49.

Late in the first period, the game was tied 12-12. A steal from Meredith and a layup from Kelliher put the Shorewomen in a 14-12 lead to finish the quarter.

Gallaudet briefly led early in the second, but WC responded with an 8-2 run, taking a 37-29 lead into halftime.

The Shorewomen continued to build on their lead in the third quarter, outsourcing Gallaudet by 8-7 and stretching their lead to 45-36.

Freshman forward Maggie Lawrence scored a layup early in the fourth quarter. The Shorewomen maintained their strong lead for the remainder of the game.

The Shorewomen will face off against Johns Hopkins on Dec. 4.

“Finally getting into conference play is very exciting for us. This is a team we know well; they are one of the best teams in our conference. Mentally we need to stay confident in our own abilities and know how we play. We are a great team as well, and I am very excited to play again,” Boggs said.
