January to February is rich with different types of awards with one of them being the Satellite Awards, which are given by the International Press Academy every year to celebrate excellence in movies and television.
Acording to IPA Admin, “Nominations are derived from advance screenings at film festivals worldwide as well as consideration screeners sent to individual journalists and/or sanctioned links as available by the deadline,”
The nominees for the 29th annual Satellite Awards were announced on Dec. 16, and the winners were announced on Jan. 26 in Los Angeles. However, due to the threat of the California wildfires, the presentation had to be postponed to an undetermined date.
“While the in-person ceremony will be rescheduled, we will still announce the winners on January 26 as planned, through a press release and on our official website,” IPA writer Mirjana Van Blaricom said.
While the winners for each category were announced on the website, there is yet to be a date for the presentation.
Universal’s “Wicked” won four awards, the most out of any film that was nominated. The awards included Ariana Grande for Actress in a Supporting Role, the Special Achievement Make-Up Award, Sound (editing and mixing), and Paul Tazewell for costume design.
“The Brutalist” came close to “Wicked” with three wins. These awards included Guy Pearce for Actor in a Supporting Role, Brady Corbet for Best Director, and Best Motion Picture, Drama.
One of the highest awards that can be given is the Mary Pickford Award; she was a Canadian American actress, producer and screenwriter in the early 20th century. She appeared in 40 movies and helped found United Artists with Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks Sr.
Today, the Mary Pickford Award is given for outstanding artistic contributions to the entertainment industry. The award was given to James Woods this year. Woods has previously received three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, and has been nominated for two Academy Awards and three Creen Actors Guild Awards.
For the other films, many took home more than one award as well. Greig Fraser won best Cinematography and Joe Walker won best Film Editing for “Dune: Part Two”. “Gladiator II” won Best Visual Effects and Production Design.
Clément Ducol and Camille won best Original Score and Original Song for “Emilia Pérez”. “Emilia Pérez” also won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. “Mi Camino” won the Satellite Award, while “El Mal” won the Golden Globe.
Other award ceremonies are forthcoming, including the Critics Choice Awards on Feb. 7 and the Academy Awards on March 2.
