On Feb.7, Kappa Sigma and the Student Events Board hosted The Great Fratsby, which was a dazzling night of poker, live music, and fun.

The event happened for the first time last year and was such a success that SEB wanted to continue the tradition. Many Washington College students had a magnificent time at the event thanks to the live music and the opportunity to learn poker for the first time. Overall, The Great Fratsby had a huge turnout.

Fairy lights wrapping around the stairs greeted the guests alongside a table filled with several types of mask and pearl necklaces. Entering upstairs felt like being transported back into the 1920’s.

Senior Asia Elliot, who performed at the event, described her love for The Great Fratsby as well as the bittersweet feelings about it being her last year at WC.

“It’s 1920s themed and they really adhere to that. The card games and the food were good, and all the decorations are so cute and the jazz music in the background really thinks about every element and try to incorporate it, and I love it,” Elliot said. “I would come back either as just a guest, or even as a performer. I would absolutely come back.”

This event did have difficulties with securing the space, especially since the pub was recently built, and not yet available to the public.

“We were able to have more space for seating and other things as well and if the campus pub were open obviously that would bring an extra element to it as well to go downstairs and get drinks,” Kappa Sigma president sophomore BJ King said.

Kappa Sigma collaborated with SEB on the event.

“We’ll just sit down and hash out ideas. I think that’s how we really started. Also, we started early. We had meetings and we brought ideas from last year and added in new elements, and…it just took off,” SEB event coordinator sophomore Tiyba Jamil said.

With teamwork and collaboration at its core, The Great Fratsby went off without a hitch, delivering an unforgettable evening of roaring 1920’s-inspired festivities. From decor to lively music and enthusiastic attendees, the event captured the spirit of the Jazz Age while bringing students together.

This event is quickly becoming a Washington College classic with plans to continue The Great Fratsby for years to come.
