Fashion is a form of self-expression, and for sophomore Jaelyn Byrd, style is a way to embrace individuality while blending past and present influences.
Byrd’s style is a unique fusion of Y2K and alternative aesthetics, setting her apart on campus with bold choices and lucky thrift finds.
“My style is inspired by a lot of things, mostly Y2K and alt styles. I try to mix things up a bit. I do not fit into one specific style,” Byrd said.
What sets Byrd apart fashion-wise is how she does not limit herself to one specific genre and instead, she does what she feels is best.
“The word different explains it well. She dresses the way that she wants to dress, and she does not care about what anybody else thinks or what anybody else is wearing,” sophomore Madison White said.
Byrd’s advice to those who admire her style is simple yet powerful: embrace exploration, take risks, and never let the opinions of others dictate your choices.
She believes that true style comes from experimentation, mixing unexpected elements, and confidently expressing yourself without fear of judgment. For Byrd, fashion is not about following trends — it is about discovering what makes you feel bold, authentic, and uniquely you.
“Thrift, DIY, trade, and make Pinterest boards of styles that reflect who you are. It will help you when you go out looking for pieces. Try not to buy from fast fashion sites if you don’t have to. Don’t be afraid to try new things, and don’t pay attention to what other people think about you,” Byrd said.
College is the perfect time in a person’s life to explore their style, as the new scenery is the excellent combination for a fresh start and a new era full of new people and experiences. Many who have been featured on Red Brick Runway have found their freedom in college.
There are plenty of hidden gems right here in Chestertown, from thrift stores such as Nearly New Shop to consignment stores such as Empty Hangers and the recently opened Label Shopper.
If looking for something even more unique, online platforms such as Depop are perfect for discovering vintage pieces that help stand out. No matter where someone is, there are always ways to create a wardrobe that is unique.
“I do hope I can inspire people to wear what they like regardless of what other people think. Living your truth is the most important part,” Byrd said.
