Washington College women’s lacrosse suffered their third loss of the season in a 20-6 contest at Salisbury University on March 1.

The only lead of the game for WC came on the heels of a free position goal scored by sophomore midfielder Elisabeth Braswell. The Sea Gulls scored the next four goals of the game to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The Shorewomen have played a stretch of games versus some of the toughest teams on their schedule, including their match-up at fifth-ranked Salisbury. The contest marks their third straight loss after a historic season opener where they bested the visiting Marywood University Pacers 24-7.

Senior attacker Tobin Chambers and junior attacker Piper Evans added two goals each in the outing to lead the team scoring.

“It’s all about staying focused and maintaining that same intensity. We have to make sure we don’t get complacent. Our offense has been learning new plays that will help us in big games, but it’s important to keep improving and sticking to the game plan. The big stretch is coming, and we need to stay focused on working hard every day during practices and games,” Chambers said.

Junior midfielder Anna Wilson and sophomore midfielder Elisabeth Braswell contributed the other two goals, while junior attacker Mia Salvatierra added two assists.

Chambers has currently scored 90 career points, as she sprints toward a career milestone of 100 career points. Additionally she has 88 goals, on track to set another benchmark of 100 career goals this season.

“Hitting those milestones would definitely be an incredible achievement, but I’m more focused on the team’s success. Reaching 100 points and goals is a nice personal accomplishment I’ve been working towards since my freshman year. I would be super excited to achieve this goal, but the most important thing is making sure we’re winning games and pushing for bigger goals as a team,” Chambers said.

Defensively, the Shorewomen are holding opponents to just 10 goals off free positions, and only giving up seven goals when playing down a defender.

“We definitely have our work cut out for us through this next stretch of non-conference play. It’s super important to play these kinds of teams before conference play, though. It gives us a lot to learn about our team before we start playing conference games and will help to build confidence knowing we can compete with some of the best teams in the country,” senior defender Gabby Drusano said.

The Shorewomen travel to Clearwater, Fla. for their spring break trip. On March 9, the squad plays St. John Fisher University, followed by a March 11 game versus Widener University.

“I am really looking forward to bonding with the team in Florida. Our team has a chance to travel and play together, and I think we will make the most of our time down in the warmth while also working hard as a team,” Chambers said. “A little change of scenery always helps reset the mind and keep us fresh for the games ahead.”

The Shorewomen return home on March 19 to play the Montclair State University Red Hawks.
