Kappa Sigma hosted their semesterly pancake breakfast on April 5 to raise money for military veterans. Members of the Washington College and Chestertown communities gathered at Emmanuel Episcopal Church for the all-you-can-eat feast.

Tickets sold for $5, and retro arcade game themed t-shirts designed by junior Hannah Choi were available for $25. Sales contributed to the fraternity’s Military Heroes Campaign.

According to President BJ King, they wanted to support a local charity this semester instead of a national one.

The proceeds went to the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary’s County, Md. The home provides affordable living for veterans. The charity was chosen after the brothers went to the Maryland Veterans Caucus at the Maryland House of Representatives looking for recommendations for a local charity.

Military heroes chairman senior Quin Kaufmann was excited by how much money the fraternity was able to raise for charity. According to Kaufmann, the brothers of Kappa Sigma raised over $3,000 in proceeds from Pancake Breakfast to support military veterans.

The event had a good turn-out. The church was filled with people hungry for pancakes prepared and served by the brothers of Kappa Sigma. Originally set to last from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event extended to 1:30 p.m. to meet demand.

“It’s been hectic because it’s been very busy, but it’s been a very fun event for all of us because it’s for charity,” sophomore Michael Kelly said.

The main draw was the pancakes, which offered three flavors: plain, chocolate, and blueberry. Various other breakfast foods were also served, including eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, and sausage. Coffee and several kinds of juice were also available.

In addition to supporting the fraternity’s philanthropic goals, once donations pass certain milestones, the brothers will be required to complete some crazy tasks. Although the $10,000 mystery goal sadly goes unrevealed, several members of Kappa Sigma will soon be dying their hair, dressing up in costumes, and participating in a pancake eating competition.

Keep an eye out for associate professor of biology and Kappa Sigma advisor Dr. Aaron Krochmal, who will be dressing up as senior Hunter Frederick for three days, as well as King’s swim in the Chester River dressed as a soggy pancake. Updates on the completion of these milestone tasks can be expected on the fraternity’s Instagram: @kappasigwac.

Kappa Sigma’s philanthropic efforts will continue later in the semester. The brothers’ 24-hour Minecraft livestream is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on April 18. Viewers will be able to participate by donating certain amounts of money to blow up or switch items in their hands. Be sure to tune in to wreak havoc on the Minecraft world and continue raising money for veterans.
