It’s pancake time! Washington College’s Kappa Sigma Fraternity raised over $4,000 for the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home at their semesterly pancake breakfast.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., brothers of the fraternity either cooked and served pancakes, cleaned dishes, or facilitated the ticket sales at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in downtown Chestertown. The event is loved by WC students and Chestertown residents alike, which made the event a buzzing scene from open to close.

Kappa Sigma uses proceeds from the all-you-can-eat breakfast to raise money for their Military Heroes campaign. Tickets for breakfast cost patrons $5 for unlimited food and drinks.

The brothers served pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, and sausage in an assembly-style line with coffee, water, and juice at the end of the station.

President of Kappa Sigma and junior BJ King said that the fraternity found Charlotte Hall in a search for a local charity which led them to the Maryland Veterans Caucus at the Maryland House of Representatives.

The brothers wanted to funnel the funds into bettering a local veteran organization rather than a widely known charity as they had been doing previously. They also partnered with the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home located in St. Mary’s County, Md, last semester.

Sophomore Warner Quinn was stationed outside, put in charge of greeting and ushering hungry guests into the church, as well as bussing tables.

Quinn said that the affordable nature of the event is what makes it so special. By creating a time for the community to share a cheap meal together with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to charity, Kappa Sigma has created an honorable tradition.

“It’s great for the community, It’s great for the veterans. It’s an all-around benefit,” Quinn said.

In the weeks leading up to the event, the fraternity was eager to beat the previous semester’s amount of $3,000, selling t-shirts designed by senior Hannah Choi and tickets while also garnering interest for prospective membership.

Kappa Sigma also promises an array of hilarious donation goals. If a certain amount of money is raised, a brother volunteers to commit to a silly task to spark laughter and further discussion of the fundraiser.

After passing the $4,000 mark this year, certain brothers will have to pick up 1,000 pieces of trash, dye their hair or beard green and pink, and run the “milk mile.”

Sophomore Sophia Clark echoed Quinn’s sentiment, saying that the partnership between Kappa Sigma and Emmaneul Episcopal Church in the name of public good is a perfect representation of the spirit of WC.

“I think a lot of other college towns have an antagonist relationship with their college, but I think the fact that [Kappa Sigma] shows they care about…being involved in the Chestertown community [which] really drives home that the College and Chestertown are not separate, they are united,” Clark said.

Pancake breakfast will return next semester, so do not miss an opportunity to feel fulfilled and full of hearty breakfast. Keep an eye out for upcoming events and partnerships on their Instagram page: @kappasigwac.
