The Shorewomen concluded their season in Carlisle, Pa. last week with a 3-0 loss to the Red Devils of Dickinson College. The conference match was the latest in a string of six defeats, which left the WC team at 5-13 on the season and 2-8 in the Centennial.
“The greatest challenge that the team faced from Dickinson was probably trying to work the ball up the sidelines with Dickinson’s press,” freshman defender Colleen Anson said. “The players on Dickinson would swarm the sidelines and make it difficult to progress the ball up-field.”
The game occurred on Nov. 1 and began with the Shorewomen in control. Senior forward Samantha McMahon shot four minutes into the first quarter, but her ball went wide to the left of the goal. Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the remainder of the period.
Dickinson scored the first goal of the day in the second quarter. Shortly after, WC earned its first corner entry of the game. Senior forward Emma Campbell delivered the corner, and the Shorewomen attempted to take the ball into the arc. However, they lost their chance as the ball went out of bounds and returned to the home team.
The Red Devils tallied one goal in the third quarter and another in the fourth, bringing the score up to 3-0, where it remained for the rest of the game.
“Despite the loss, the best moment was coming together with my teammates at the end of the game to celebrate all of our incredible moments,” senior defender Kendal Thomson said.
By the end of the sixty minutes, Dickinson had outshot the Shorewomen 11-1. Even in the face of the onslaught, junior goalkeeper Charlotte Schurman made three successful saves.
With the 3-0 victory, the Red Devils climbed to 15-2 on the regular season and 5-12 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson will also be proceeding to the Centennial Conference Tournament on Nov. 4.
Earlier in the season, freshman forward Jamie Baldwin remarked that the Shorewomen were “seen as the underdogs but a strong team nevertheless.” Hopefully, the experiences of this year will propel the team into an equally driven, but even more successful, season next fall.
“While the season didn’t end the way we wanted to, I’m proud of how hard our team fought all semester, taking on ranked opponents and even battling in seven overtime periods,” senior midfielder Celia Long said. “I’m grateful for each moment on and off the field with my teammates, and I’m happy I got to play with them all one last time on Saturday.”
