Billionaire Elon Musk has once again come under fire, this time for his problematic AI chatbot Grok. The Center for Countering Digital Hate launched an investigation earlier this month focused on xAI’s image generation features, which allow users to create explicit images with full nudity and sexual activity.
The European Union has launched its own investigation, further escalating disputes between U.S. and European governments over online content censorship.
Grok was created by Musk to challenge industry leaders like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. However, his mission to launch an anti-woke platform has nosedived into a sea of problematic extreme far-right hate.
According to ABC, last year Grok “spouted antisemitic tropes, praised Adolf Hitler, and made other hateful commentary to users of Musk’s X social media platform. The chatbot was also found…to be echoing the views of its billionaire creator, so much so that it would sometimes search online for Musk’s stance on an issue before offering up an opinion.”
For general AI users, this might not seem like much of an issue. For Trump supporters who’ve bought into the woke versus Trump propaganda, Grok’s extremism is only going to further reinforce hateful and damaging ideology.
Musk, a known free speech proponent, seems to have fallen off the deep end. There is a way to uphold freedom of speech without endangering children, generating sexually explicit images, and spreading hate speech. Maintaining protections does not inherently equal suppression.
Unsurprisingly, President Donald Trump and his administration have sided with Musk and criticized the regulations. Trump clearly exhibits no concern for the damage that Grok’s sexual and even pornographic image generations have done.
Instead of backing his billionaire buddies, Trump should be supporting the regulation of unsolicited and nonconsensual pornographic images.
The U.S. government’s silence on this issue is incredibly alarming, as The European Union and middle eastern countries are the only ones to enact policies to protect their citizens from the harmful outputs by Grok.
According to The New York Times, “The European authorities said that X was being investigated for possible violation of the Digital Services Act…Starting in late December, sexually explicit images generated by Grok, including of children, flooded the service, drawing worldwide criticism from victims and regulators.”
In addition to adults being depicted in sexually explicit images, thousands of images appear to involve children, an inexcusable offense.
The CCDH’s investigation found that in 11 days, Grok generated roughly three million images, including 23,000 of which were found to depict children, according to The Guardian.
Ironically, the same administration criticizing the censorship and regulations for Grok, is the same administration pushing for book bans, silencing the free press, and allowing federal law enforcement to brutally attack its own citizens for legally recording public activity.
Hypocrisy is as ripe as ever in America, and the roots run deep through the Trump administration.
