At the end of each spring semester, Washington College’s Dance Club performs a Dance Showcase, following the Theatre and Dance Department’s “Dancescape” show in the fall.

This year, though, there is a bit of a twist as Dance Club will present their first showcase with a specific theme: “Dance Club Spring Showcase: The Elements.”

The show will be focused around the four classical elements—earth, air, fire, and water—with each dance incorporating a specific element or transitioning between two of them.

Dance Club president and showcase director Evie Kaye took inspiration from professional dance shows, such as George Balanchine’s ballet “Jewels,” when she decided to center the showcase around a theme, hoping to shine a light on dance at WC.

“Most professional dance shows have themes and storylines,” Kaye said. “I have been on a…mission to elevate dance at Washington College. Dance is a universal language, where stories and expressions of life can be understood.”

Choreographers are free to interpret their element however they choose, allowing creative freedom to blossom within the united theme. Dance styles range from lyrical to musical theatre jazz.

Sophomore Dance Club Vice President Sara Bozarth said her earth piece is inspired by the joy of human creativity.

“Human life is miraculous and I believe the most human thing is to create. Music and dance are so uniquely human, and their existence brings meaning to so many lives,” Bozarth said.

Senior choreographer KT Pagano said this was the first time she has choreographed a dance since high school and that she is excited to participate in the process.

“My inspiration came from last spring semester when I was going through a bit of a rough time… My goal with it is to embody the experience of dealing with and getting through that hard time, with kind of a storm on the sea vibe,” Pagano said.

While the showcase does not take place until the end of the semester, Dance Club spends a long time preparing for the show.

Rehearsals have just started this past week, and will continue weekly until the show in April.

Some choreographers are still looking for dancers to bring their vision to life. Rehearsals are open to everyone and choreographers are happy to meet people where they are.

Those interested in joining a dance can see Dance Club’s Instagram, @wacdanceclub, for a complete schedule of rehearsals.

“I am looking forward to seeing the other choreographer’s pieces! There are so many talented dancers here at Washington College, and they all inspire me to be better,” Bozarth said.

The Dance Club Spring Showcase is scheduled to take place on April 17 and 18 in Alonzo G. and Virginia Gent Decker Theatre.
