President Donald Trump delivered the annual State of the Union address to Congress on Feb. 24. During the longest speech before a joint session of Congress in the past 60 years, Trump boasted of his accomplishments and proclaimed that the United States is thriving under a “golden age.”
Later that night, the official Democratic rebuttals were delivered in English by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and in Spanish by California Sen. Alex Padilla. In their responses, Spanberger and Padilla drew attention to Trump’s failure to improve affordability for Americans and his unconstitutional immigration policy, as well as encouraged viewers to vote in the November midterm elections.
In refreshingly concise responses, Spanberger and Padilla spoke directly to the economic concerns of the American people and encouraging voters to take matters into their own hands come November; they were able to accomplish what Trump could not through his lies about inflation, gas prices, healthcare, and other pillars of American daily life
“In the most innovative and exceptional nation in the history of the world, Americans deserve to know that their leaders are focused on addressing the problems that keep them up at night,” Spanberger said, according to AP News.
Spanberger won her landslide victory in November by emphasizing her commitment to addressing economic issues. However, unlike many politicians, Spanberger’s campaign was not founded on false promises.
According to The Guardian, after just a few weeks in office, Spanberger called for a package of reforms that would reduce energy costs for low-income Virginians and protect and expand affordable housing, among other measures.
The promise and delivery of affordability from Spanberger has undoubtedly been refreshing for many Virginians, as well as other Americans supporting her. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for the Democratic party to promote a campaign prioritizing economics heading into the midterm elections.
“Small businesses have suffered… Farmers have suffered – some losing entire markets. Everyday Americans are paying the price,” Spanberger said, according to The Guardian.
By addressing the devastating economic effects of the Trump administration’s agenda during her rebuttal, Spanberger spoke not only as the governor of Virginia, but also as a representative of the Democratic party attempting to appeal to all Americans.
Padilla’s Spanish-language rebuttal echoed similar themes, including a focus on the extreme immigration policies of the Trump administration.
“We see ICE agents using excessive force: entering homes without judicial warrants and shooting at cars with families still inside… We are living a nightmare that divides and destroys our communities,” Padilla said, according to the LA Times.
Spanberger also condemned the anonymous federal agents that have operated unconstitutionally and without accountability to enforce an agenda that promotes fear and division.
“Our president has sent poorly trained federal agents into our cities where they have arrested and detained American citizens and people who aspire to be Americans, and they have done it without a warrant,” Spanger said, according to The Guardian.
The cohesion between the rebuttals of Spanberger and Padilla presented a united Democratic party in their response to Trump’s SOTU and by extension, the upcoming midterms.
In addition to the official Democratic response to the SOTU, another speech, the “People’s State of the Union,” featured Democratic lawmakers, state and local leaders, and celebrities rallying outside of the U.S. Capital during Trump’s speech, according to AP News.
Although failing to capture quite as much attention as Spanberger’s response, the People’s State of the Union was a powerful statement, with figures like Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen speaking at the event.
The Democratic response to the SOTU has significant implications for all eligible voters in the upcoming midterm elections, especially those who may be hesitant to vote for a Democrat. By emphasizing the hypocrisy of the Trump administration and directly addressing issues of affordability in their responses, the Democratic party made a strong argument for support from a broad demographic in the midterms.
