It took until my second semester sophomore year for me to finally cave to the peer pressure and begin writing for The Elm.
Originally, I was a writer for the features section and with only one semester of experience under my belt, then became the Features Editor my junior year. This is where I learned most of the lessons during my time at The Elm, such as how to give edits that actually make sense to people, what people want to read, and even how to manage my time. This period was valuable to me as I also began to find the love for the sections of a newspaper that are not “serious.”
To be honest, in the past, I expected the world of journalism to be more depressing then it has turned out to be. Instead, it is a place of knowledge and opinions where people come together to be informed.
After working in Features, I then went on to my current position as copy editor, and out of all the jobs I have done, this one has been the most fun.
Being able to read all the sections, watch writers and editors alike improve, and keep track of all the new trends in sports, movies, and politics has been amazing.
For this position, I do want to thank Evelyn Lucado greatly for allowing me to contribute in this way. As a leader and a writer, I expect you to accomplish amazing things. I hope to see your name in journalism going forward, wherever that may be. You are an incredible friend, travel partner, and writer and I wish you the best.
Also at this copy table is the wonderful Amelia Bickel who is detail oriented, so funny, and always making copy a wonderful experience. I hope you continue on in your writing and are able to continue to be the wonderful triple-threat that you are. Dance, music, and writing is a great combination that I hope you are able to pursue forever.
As for the new editor-in-chief, Aaron, I cannot wait to see what you do with The Elm in the future, and I hope your sense of humor persists.
For Logan, Elizabeth, and Emmie, as we graduate together, I hope we stay in touch and that whatever you desire for the future comes true.
Thank you to The Elm as a whole where I was given the opportunity to grow as a writer and a person. The experiences and friendships I made here I will carry throughout my life and never forget. To everyone writing, never stop doing so. To those I met, know you at least have me cheering you on forever.
