Students returning for a new semester may be met by many potential changes and beginnings on campus. Inspired by Sophie’s Cafe, the new store, Sassafast, aims to provide better access to food and drinks for the Washington College community. Sassafast is currently open to all students on campus and is located on the south side of Sassafras Hall.

Along with this store opening in Sassafras Hall, renovations are progressing on the Sass Patio, a new study and hangout spot that could create greater attraction to the upperclassmen side of campus.

Student Government Association President senior Zach Tipton hopes this new location will help open up this side of campus, which has previously only been residential, into a community where all students can feel welcome.

“The vision is to have it serve as a second library terrace location where students can work, hangout, socialize, have meetings,” Tipton said.

Dean of Students Greg Krikorian said that the preparation and final touches to Sassafast was a collaboration between the SGA, AVI, and Buildings and Grounds, with added signage designed by WC Marketing and Communications.

“Feedback can be provided to AVI in any way students want. The ‘Text the Manager’ feature is certainly an easy way to communicate. Also, SGA and Student Affairs can share input,” Krikorian said.

Krikorian also hopes this will support the student experience going forward.

Sophomore Akira Lightbourne is feeling excited about visiting Sassafast as it adds a more convenient option within walking distance to her dorm.

“[Sophie’s] was something I valued as a freshman, and now I can do the same as a sophomore,” Lightbourne said.

The Sass patio is projected to be finished by mid-September, with a grand opening event for both spaces happening later that month.
